So you’ve purchased a new pair of shoes, taken them out on the town, and now they look a bit worse for wear. Don’t panic, our shoe care tips are the best in the business at keeping shoes looking shmick.
Tip #1: Always remember to wear protection
Get your mind out of the gutter, we’re talking about protecting your shoes before wearing them. It’s a vital step that is often missed and could be the difference between shoes that last a lifetime and shoes that look like they’ve been worn a lifetime.
Step 1: Lay down some newspaper on a flat surface and remove the laces from both shoes.
Step 2: Gently remove dirt and dust with a soft brush or a damp cloth.
Step 3: Hold your weather protecting spray 20cm away from each shoe and coat evenly.
Step 4: Allow 30 minutes to dry before wearing.
Tip #2: Regularly buff and polish your wheels
Knowing how to polish your shoes well is a must in the modern man’s repertoire. It’s not only important for the appearance of your shoes, but also for the health of the leather.
Step 1: Lay down some newspaper on a flat surface and remove the laces from both shoes.
Step 2: Gently remove dirt and dust with a soft brush or a damp cloth.
Step 3: Wrap a clean cloth around two fingers and dampen with block cream shoe polish
Step 4: Apply evenly all over each shoe, rubbing in small circles (top tip: use a toothbrush to get into small areas).
Step 5: After polish dries, buff off with a clean cloth.
Tip #3: Don’t bring the heat
If your shoes have become wet from rain, never use a hairdryer or the heater to dry them. This level of heat can warp the leather and cause much more damage than repair. Practice patience and stuff the inside with newspaper to air dry overnight instead.
Tip #4: Store for success
Your shoes can be worn for upwards of eight hours per day, so it’s important that they are stored correctly overnight to extend their longevity. To help keep shoe shape, use a shoe tree or keep the tissue paper from the packaging and scrunch into the forepart. Important tip! Wearing the same pair of shoes every day (especially to work) will dramatically reduce their life span. Shoes with leather linings need to dry and air out overnight; we suggested rotating between a few pairs during the week where possible.
